Did you know we're in the middle of an avocado glut?

It's bad news for Australian avocado farmers, but it's great news for those of us who love avocados.

These days, it's common to see grocers and supermarkets selling the beloved green fruit for $1 each, or even less.

Unfortunately for us millennials, the avocado glut won't make it any easier to enter the housing market.

But the good news is adding an avocado to your weekly shop won't break the bank.

With that in mind, here are some ideas for making the most of the situation.

Tacos four ways

For a family-friendly weeknight meal, it's hard to go past Heidi Sze's delicious taco bowls with spiced beef, beans and vegetables. Pro tip: for a vegetarian option, you can switch the beef for two cans of beans and a can of tomatoes. It works just as well.

Hetty McKinnon pairs halloumi with avocado and zesty mango salsa for a fresh and fruity take on the classic taco. For best results, Hetty recommends using "just-ripe" mangoes and curing the fruit in lime juice, salt and chilli.

Flathead is sustainable, affordable and perfect for fish tacos. In this recipe from Heidi Sze, flathead is lightly spiced and paired with cabbage slaw and a garlicky avocado sauce.

How to pick the perfect avocado

For a vegan take on tacos, you can use jackfruit, a large spiky fruit native to South and South-East Asia.

This recipe uses canned jackfruit and will be popular with vegans and non-vegans alike.

Yummy salads and bowls

This tuna, chickpea and avocado salad is healthy, family-friendly and ready in just 30 minutes. It's topped with quick-pickled red onion for extra bite, and you'll find most of the ingredients in your pantry.

As the weather warms up, a substantial and refreshing salad can make for a easy weeknight meal.

In this recipe from Hetty McKinnon, chilled soba noodles are mixed with vinegary marinated cucumber and smooth, velvety avocado. The salad can be prepped in 10 minutes, and ready 15 minutes later.

If you love sushi, you'll enjoy this easy sushi bowl, which combines teriyaki chicken, avocado, rice, nori and cucumber. You can make the chicken ahead of time or use salmon if you prefer fish.

Something more substantial…

Steak and avocado, you say? The combination certainly works in this dish from Julia Busuttil Nishimura. It's perfect for warmer weather and requires minimal cooking.

Melbourne fruiterer Thanh Truong — better known as The Fruit Nerd — knows a lot about avocados. He likes to serve avo with steamed basa fish and salad. It's a dish that's bright, interesting and easy to prepare.

For something completely different

Avocado on toast is a classic, but have you ever thought about adding vegemite? My colleague Rachel does just that — and she says the strange combination is delicious.

Or what about coffee and avocado mousse?

Christian makes his by mixing avocado, coffee and milk in a blender with some sugar. The result is a smooth, caffeinated green mousse. He swears it "tastes really good".
