Draw animals like a pro with Aaron Blaise

Long before I was a director and animator with Walt Disney Feature Blitheness, I was a lover of wildlife. Growing up equally a bit of a wild child in the swamps of south Florida, I would typically be found running through the woods, barefoot of grade, tracking animals. I would describe them in my sketchbooks or even collect the bones of animal kills and save them for later written report.

It was always my dream to exist an illustrator for National Geographic and to see the world. Instead, I went on to Disney and a successful blitheness career, but I all the same plant a way to pursue my love of drawing animals by working on archetype films like The King of beasts King and Blood brother Bear. At present I want to share some of the knowledge from my years of studying animals with you!

01. Observe showtime

Before you start to draw, finish and really look. Take a moment to detect and study the animal. How does it move? Ofttimes you'll notice patterns of movement. What's the brute doing?

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Tin can you anticipate where information technology will exist next? If it's a hot day it might be heading for shade, for example. These sorts of details can be crucial in helping you capture details because animals oftentimes won't sit notwithstanding and pose for you – especially in the wild!

02. Do your enquiry before you get there

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

I do my homework on what animals I'll see in a particular surface area. For instance, on a trip to Alaska I may endeavour to learn everything I can about grizzly bears, muskox and moose before I go far. I'll written report books and do research to learn about their muscles, skeletons and patterning. I'll even lookout live webcams of an surface area to give me a sense of the environment. This information volition aid me when I'yard on location, and relieve a lot of fourth dimension.

03. Have a mental picture

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals often don't sit still. To combat this I've developed a technique of taking a mental snapshot. I don't stare at the beast the entire time I'm drawing. Instead, I'll glance at the animal and then speedily look abroad to my page.

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

By doing this the last image of the brute that I saw is frozen in my heed. Combined with my research on anatomy, I'yard able to go an accurate cartoon down on the page.

04. Break the body up into sections

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is an observation I've made over the years. Almost quadrupeds can be broken down into half dozen main areas: the caput, the neck, the front legs and shoulders, the body, the rear legs and hips, and finally the tail. This may seem similar a simple observation, but once yous break the animal up this way you tin overlap those areas in whatsoever orientation in infinite.

05. Empathize basic comparative anatomy

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

People enquire how do I know all these details well-nigh the animals I describe? The answer is: I don't! Merely I do know comparative anatomy. Most animals, especially mammals, have all the aforementioned "parts" – but spaced out differently. And this is true of humans as well. Once I understood that

I accept basically the same parts as a lion, just in different locations, it was a eureka moment in my ability to describe them.

06. Scout your proportions

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Now that yous understand that most animals have the same basic and musculus groups as you lot do, information technology's just a matter of playing with the proportions and getting those correct. This is primarily a matter of practice and repetition. But in one case you start to go the spacing and proportions right, you'll be able to depict your subject area in any pose or angle.

07. Use black and white ink on midtone paper

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

How to enhance a pencil drawing of a king of beasts's head with inks, bringing it to life:

a). Create a rough sketch

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Beginning lay in a rough drawing in pencil bearing in listen all the tips yous accept already learned so far. It'due south okay to be loose at this stage. This can give your piece of work a dynamic border! You'll refine the epitome in the later steps.

b). Add together darks to the drawing

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Next, use a castor pen and/or ball bespeak pen to lay down the darks. Use waterproof ink here in case you want to add watercolour or a wash later. Attempt to work in one consistent management and so you don't smear the ink.

c). Utilise white ink for highlights

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

At present utilise a white pen (I like Sakura Gelly Roll pens for this) and add final accents and highlights. Because y'all started with a mid- tone and not on white you can go lighter and arrive pop! Use markers to add more shading.

08. Stay loose and notice the flow

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

This is similar to footstep six if you want to get downward a gesture of your pose correct away. The animate being is likely to move on you lot, so you lot need to go the essence of the pose fast. If you're cartoon a tiger or lion you need to become the activeness and don't worry about every stripe and whisker. Instead, look for the line of action and rhythm to the pose.

09. Capture good silhouettes

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

The nuts of skillful animate being drawing are not that dissimilar from drawing a good human graphic symbol. You want their pose to read every bit clearly and concisely every bit possible. If your silhouette isn't clear then the drawing won't be understood past the viewer. It's the same whether you lot're drawing an elephant, a acquit or whatsoever other animal.

10. Use overlapping shapes to create depth

(Prototype: © Aaron Blaise)

Once you're happy capturing the dissimilar shapes of your called animal, try overlapping them. This volition give your image a sense of depth and space in the frame. Properly overlapping each shape will give your drawings a sense of believability and life.

11. Create action and drama

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Animals are living creatures. If yous've been out in the wild cartoon yous'll take noticed that they're always on the move. Y'all should be capturing this in your drawings every bit well. While there's goose egg wrong with a proficient animal portrait (so to speak), I've institute that images of animals in action ever become a bigger response and accept more impact. Work hard to develop a sense of drama and life into your images.

12. Be mindful of light and shadow

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Proper use of light and shadow in your image tin can help enhance the feeling of drama that we discussed in step eleven. I'll often push or exaggerate the lighting of nature to heighten that feeling. Used properly, a dramatically bandage shadow tin can deeply enhance the mood of your image every bit well every bit give information technology a sense of time and identify.

13. Look for the big shapes get-go

(Paradigm: © Aaron Blaise)

A typical error that I see artists brand is they become too defenseless up in the details correct away. You lot don't need to exercise that. Instead, get down the big shapes starting time. For example, if you're drawing an elephant then find the big "bean shape" of the trunk and lay that in, followed by the triangle or wedge shape of the head. Become their placement right and the rest will come together quickly.

14. Await for emotion and personality

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

Whether cartoon an animate being that's realistic or cartoony, endeavour to become equally much personality every bit possible into the image. Every bit humans we await for this naturally and gravitate towards information technology. Use that to your advantage whenever possible. A little exaggeration or emphasis can go a long way.

15. Be selective when cartoon your animal's hair and fur

(Image: © Aaron Blaise)

There's no need to exist too detailed hither. You don't need or desire to draw each and every hair on an beast. Instead, make marks in key spots to suggest it. Places where the body bends are a great spot to signal a hair break.
